A man from Immingham who stabbed another man in a ‘jealous’ and ‘frenzied’ attack in Grimsby has been jailed.

Andrew Prior, 29-years-old, of Kings Road in Immingham was charged with grievous bodily harm with intent in December last year and was sentenced at Grimsby Crown Court on Monday, 4th August.

At around 1.30am on Thursday, 19th December 2024, a man went to hospital in Grimsby with a stab wound to his stomach.

The hospital reported this to the police who then looked into the circumstances of the incident.

Suffering with internal bleeding and needing emergency surgery, the man was able to provide a statement to police and described the man who attacked him as having a ‘scouse’ accent, as well as describing what he looked like, what he was wearing and crucially, that he had seen him about four weeks prior whereby he flashed what he believed to be a knife at him in the street.

From initial CCTV enquiries, the victim is seen to park up outside an address on Victor Street at around 12.15am, when a woman is seen to leave the passenger seat and go into a property.

Fifteen minutes later, the van lights come back on, and a figure is seen running around the back of the van with what is believed to be a knife in his hand, before the van is stalled and driven off.

Prior was located by officers the same night at an address where he was arrested and taken into custody. While the injured man was still in hospital, an ID parade was arranged whereby the victim positively identified Prior, confirming him as the attacker.

Meanwhile, officers carried out a search of Prior’s property and discovered a knife which through forensic analysis later confirmed the presence of both the victim’s blood and Prior’s DNA.

Forensic analysis came back with a DNA match with the victim’s blood on items tested from inside Prior’s property and the victim’s van. When this incriminating evidence was put to Prior, he continued to deny any involvement and claimed that the victim was the one who was trying to run him over, stating that it was in fact the victim who was the perpetrator and tried to stab him with a machete instead.

Prior was consequently charged and remanded into custody.

Prior has been sentenced to seven years and two months after he pleaded guilty at Grimsby Crown Court on Tuesday, 3 June.

Detective Constable Jak Shepherd from Grimsby’s Criminal Investigation Department said:

“Prior is a dangerous individual who stabbed someone he barely knew in a jealous and frenzied attack.

“He has shown nothing but disregard for the seriousness of what he has done and at the time he fled the scene not knowing if he had ultimately inflicted fatal wounds to his victim.

“He then went home and attempted to destroy evidence that could implicate him in the attack.

“The victim’s injuries were so severe he suffered significant internal bleeding and needed emergency surgery, he is lucky to be alive and I cannot commend him enough for his assistance throughout the entire investigation. Even as he lay in hospital, he provided vital information that ultimately led to Prior’s arrest, and whilst the mental scars of the attack will undoubtedly remain with him for a long time, I hope that the result here today provides some comfort in knowing he will be behind bars.

“Knife crime can impact people from any walk of life, that is why we continue to do everything we can to take weapons off our streets.

“It’s important to educate our communities that by possessing some types of knives, even just at home, they could be committing a criminal offence. It is also crucial to mention the fact that even if they are not the one carrying a knife, but were there when a knife was wielded, they too could suffer the criminal consequences.

“Whether you find yourself in a confrontational situation at home or are thinking about carrying a knife to protect yourself or intimidate others, ask yourself. What is the point? One knife impacts more than one life.”
