A Hull man has been given a life sentence after he admitted killing his friend.

Ambulance crews were first called to Gainford Grove at around 4.30am on the 2nd March to reports of a man being repeatedly kicked and punched in the street.

When Police arrived they found Christian Belcher trying to drag 45-year-old Richard Gray into a car - he later died in hospital from a serious head injury.

31-year-old Christian Belcher of Gainford Grove in Hull admitted killing the 45-year-old and also pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker.

At Hull Crown Court Belcher was given a minimum term of 15 years in prison.

Following the sentence of Belcher, Senior Investigating Officer Superintendent Doug Blackwood said:

“Firstly I would like to commend Richard’s family who have shown incredible strength throughout the entirety of the investigation.

“Whilst the sentence imposed cannot bring Richard back, I really hope that it provides his loved ones with a sense of comfort in knowing that the man responsible for Richard’s death is now behind bars and unable to harm anyone else.

“The men had been friends over the years, however an altercation ensued between the pair where Richard was subjected to a brutal attack, which sadly led to his fatal wounds.

“I’m pleased Belcher admitted what he did that day, sparing Richard’s family the further suffering of a trial.

“I would like to thank all my colleagues who attended this horrific incident, the Major Crime Team for their dedication and hard work in building a strong case against Belcher, and the public for their assistance in helping us secure justice for Richard.

Speaking of their devastating loss, Richard’s mum said:

“I can’t begin to put into words the devastation that has been brought upon our family since losing Richard, the pain as a mother is unimaginable.

“I never thought I would have to try and explain how I feel about the loss of my son. To lose Richard to the hands of someone he knew and trusted is unforgiveable and I will never be able to comprehend why Belcher carried out such a horrific attack against him.

“Richard had his life cut short by a man who he called his friend. He leaves behind his nieces and nephews, who he will never get to see grow up, all because of Belcher’s callous actions.

“I am pleased that Christian Belcher accepted responsibility and is now being punished. I am glad justice is being served for Richard, but this will never take away the unbearable heartache of having to live the rest of my life without him.”
