Kids in Hull risking their lives by entering derelict buildings
Humberside Police say they're getting reports every day of youngsters going into dangerous buildings like the Lord Line in Hull.
Children in Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire are being warned to stay away from dangerous and derelict buildings during the summer holidays.
Police say they're getting reports every day of kids going into disused buildings at risk of collapse like the Lord Line in Hull.
They're concerned the problem could get even worse now kids have broken off school for the summer.
Humberside PCSO Richard Whelan fears it's only a matter of time until someone's killed or seriously injured and wants young people to be aware of the risks. He told Viking:
"The ultimate danger is that you could lose your life. You wouldn't have to do anything wrong, you could just go into this building, it collapses and you lose your life.
"I don't think kids are aware of the dangers; you talk to them and show them the faults in the buildings, where the walls are buckling and things like that and they'd not even considered it because no child does a risk assessment of a building when they go into it to hang out with their friends.
"It is probably out of pure interest why they are going in there but there is that dangerous side to the building that they're probably not aware of.
"I have attended numerous incidents where children have been injured. In one of the buildings on the dock in Hull, there is an old sinkwell in the building and this young girl had gone in there when it was dark and fell down it and broke her leg. Emergency services have also got to go in there to rescue that person and it is putting their safety at risk too.
"It is one of the biggest issues we have, I would say daily we are called to the Lord Line building in Hull. Kids are just attracted to empty buildings and they see it as something a bit different and as an adventure but we need to explain the dangerous side to it."
