Jobs saved as House of Fraser store in Hull stays open
It had been due to shut on the 29th.
Staff on the verge of losing their jobs at a doomed House of Fraser store have been given a last-minute reprieve after it was saved from closure.
The Hull branch of the historic company had been due to shut on December 29.
But the company announced that the more than 100 staff who were due to be made redundant now had the option to keep their jobs.
House of Fraser said the deal to remain open was agreed following talks between the company, the landlord and Hull City Council.
It was one of several sites earmarked for closure, including further stores in Edinburgh, Nottingham and Swindon after owners Sports Direct failed to reach an agreement with their respective landlords.
In a statement, chief executive Mike Ashley said:
"It is great that the Hull store is getting a second chance and saving over 100 jobs."
"This is a good example of what can be achieved when everyone pulls together."
Following his acquisition of the chain in August, Mr Ashley pledged to save around 47 of House of Fraser's 59 outlets
