Investigations are underway after a toddler was taken to hospital after a suspicious fire in Hull yesterday.

A little girl was taken to hospital and six families are temporarily homeless after the fire in a flat on Roborough Close in Bransholme yesterday morning.

A joint police and fire investigation's been launched after enquires suggest the extensive damage was caused as a result of some criminal activity.

It's suspected the flat where the fire started was used for stripping wire and copper but the fire has spread and the rubber surrounding the wiring and pipes has melted releasing dangerous toxic gases and smoke. Emergency services say it was lucky no-one was hurt or killed.

Officers have issued the following health warning:

Handling Burnt Copper: Even after the insulation or rubber has been burned off of the copper, it is still not safe. Copper wiring will release copper particles, which can cause kidney and lung damage. Copper also retains heat easily, so in handling the copper you are exposing yourself to increased risks of burns. Copper has a tendency to explode when exposed to extreme heat. The heat of the metal can cause it to set fire to trees, houses, and other items in the vicinity. A blaze caused by copper shards can turn into a major fire accident.
