People in Hull who've been without hot water and cooking facilities since Tuesday are being told 'every possible is being done to get things back to normal'.

Their gas supply was cut off when a burst water man caused water to get into the gas network.

Engineers have had to pump more than 13,000 litres of water out of the system.

So far around 100 homes have been restored but work will continue to reonnect the remaining 300.

Amanda White, customer operations area manager for Northern Gas Networks said:

"We’re continuing to restore gas supplies on a property by property basis. We can’t switch customers back on until we’re certain that water has been removed from the gas mains in the street, as well as the service pipes which connect each property to the gas mains.

"Unfortunately, this is a very time consuming process, and means work will stretch into the weekend. We’re continuing to make steady progress, however, and won’t stop until all our customers are back on supply.

"All our engineers are incredibly grateful for the support and goodwill shown by customers. We know this is not easy for residents, and everything possible is being done to get things back to normal."

Affected homes are in the Bricknell Avenue, Burniston Road, Hartoft Road, Cropton Road, National Avenue, Appleton Road, Cloughton Grove and Langdale Avenue areas.

People in priority are being provided with electric hot plates and heaters.

Showering facilities are available at Hull Indoor Sports Centre on Harpings Road (male only) and Culture of Leisure Ltd on Beverley Road.
