The Humber Bridge is to close overnight on Saturday for vital maintenance work.

It will be closed to all traffic, pedestrians and cyclists from 9pm on Saturday until 7am on Sunday.

The work follows months of inspection and preparation work after Storm Ciara in February 2020.

Andrew Arundel, Chief Operating Officer at the Humber Bridge, said: “Now the long period of investigation work has been carried out and the extent of the problem identified, it is essential we carry out the necessary maintenance work at the earliest opportunity.

“The weekend of the 9th has been selected because the weather is sufficiently good for us to be able to complete the works.

“Although we appreciate it will always be inconvenient to some users to close the bridge at any time, by closing overnight on a weekend, we hope to minimise the disruption caused.

“We’re confident the works can be completed in a single night so the bridge should reopen as normal at 7am on Sunday morning.”

Mr Arundel added that once testing on the bearings had been carried out, the cones that have been in position on the bridge for a long time will be removed.

“We know the cones have caused significant frustration among bridge users and we’d like to thank them for their patience,” he said.

“As soon as we know the new bearings are working as they should, the cones will be removed.”

Despite the closure, emergency service vehicles will be able to cross the bridge during the maintenance work. Other bridge users are encouraged to either reschedule non-essential journeys during these hours or in the case of essential travel, set aside more time to travel via Goole.
