The Humber Bridge walkways will re-open to pedestrians and cyclists tomorrow morning - following weeks of closures after safety concerns.

The walkways were closed last month - but will re-open at 5am tomorrow - following a consultation period and safety upgrades.

They'll be open from 5am until 9pm each day. Anyone wanting to cross outside these hours will need to register with the bridge beforehand.

Extra signs will be installed on the footway, CCTV coverage will be extended - and a 'Wellbeing Hub' staffed by specialist mental health and wellbeing volunteers is being set up.

Hull West MP Emma Hardy has been holding weekly meetings with the Humber Bridge Board - and says she will continue to do so.

She said: “The Humber Bridge is an iconic and beautiful structure, loved by many and I know how upset people were when the walkway had to close.

"I have been meeting with the Chair of the Humber Bridge Board weekly throughout this time. I am very pleased that the Humber Bridge walkway is reopening for all users tomorrow, following an upgrade to the CCTV and establishment of a well-being hub, staffed by Mind and the Bearded Fisherman.

"I will continue to meet with the Humber Bridge Board regularly to monitor progress in the development of physical safety measures, such as barriers and keep everyone updated.”

A spokesperson for the Humber Bridge Board said: "“We have also been working very closely with mental health charities and partners to set up the Information and Wellbeing Hub (the Hub) which will be opening on Wednesday 5th May. This will be led by Hull & East Yorkshire MIND & The Bearded Fishermen.

“The Hub will provide information, support and signposting to the general public regarding mental health, ultimately working towards the goal of reducing the stigma attached to poor mental health. Opening hours will be limited to begin with but will be reviewed regularly.

“Other changes we have put in place include additional signage and changes to our CCTV system, which will enable the west footway to be opened on Thursday.

“The Board committed to progressing the feasibility study into increasing the footway parapets in September 2019. This was to be progressed in 2020, however, the impact of the COVID pandemic severely affected this. This is now being revisited and progressed.”
