It has been a disappointing start for some businesses in Hull today as shop owners haven’t had the queue’s they originally anticipated.

Last time lockdown ended, there was a huge queue of shoppers outside Primark eagerly waiting to get in but this time, people walked in straight

Primark, Hull city centre

From today (2nd December) essential and non-essential retail including indoor and outdoor markets along with car boot sales can re-open.

One shopper said: “It’s very sad to see shops closing, I don’t think there will be many still open in the future, just mainly food shops. I think people are starting to get the message about staying at home.

Graham Williams manages Hull’s oldest Joke shop at Dinsdale’s, he said: “We have never ever seen anything like it, even through the recessions. I’m so pleased to re-open as we are not trading online. I just don’t know what’s going to happen though, hopefully we will do alright.

Its not just businesses it’s having an impact on as street performers would normally be making a few pounds at this time of year.

One Hull Busker said: “I’ve busked all around, but this year is a lot slower than every other year. I’ve never seen such a small amount of people out. Just before the last lockdown, it was very busy compared to normal. It's having a bad financial affect as usually the money would pay for my family’s Christmas presents.”

Things were a little different further down Prospect Street as people flocked to Debenhams. The queue went right around the building.

Our sister station Viking FM went to have a look:

It follows yesterday’s announcement on the department store going into liquidation with around 12,000 jobs at risk.

The store in Hull city centre re-opened with a 70% clearance sale.
