A service is taking place in Hull today to remember the lives that have been lost on the roads.

It's part of World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

Mark Ieronimo is from the council:

"It's really important to keep everyone's mind focused on how we can save lives and we must remember that road safety is everybody's responsibility.

"Whether you're a pedestrian, cyclist, or are driving a car, there's something you can do to keep people safe."

Mark says what we can expect from the service.

"The Lord Mayor will read a poem and light candles for those who have lost their lives.

"There's also a book of remembrance so people can add the names of people they've lost to that and those names will be read out at each service in the future."

He tells us why the service is important to people who have lost loved ones in road accidents.

"It just gives a focal point for them each year where they can be connected with other people who are experiencing other things.

"This is a World Remembrance Day for the Victims of Road Traffic Accidents - it reaches beyond Hull and stretches worldwide."

The service will be held at St Mary’s Church on Lowgate starting at 2:30pm.

Meanwhile a leading charity's warning victims of road accidents are being forgotten and failed by a lack of support.

Last year, almost 17-hundred people died on Britain’s roads.

The charity Brake's calling on the government to support a new Victims' Charter.
