A Hull mum is urging other parents not to take any risks and get their children protected against meningitis.

Kelly Whitehead's daughter, Katie, contracted Meningitis B when she was just 3 months old but due to Kelly's quick actions - she went on to make a full recovery.

It's as a new vaccination programme against Meningitis B and septicaemia for babies has now been made available in the UK.

It launched at the start of September and Kelly now wants to see more parents taking advantage of the new vaccination.

Kelly told Viking FM:

"My daughter Katie contracted MenB in August 2004 when she was 3 months old. Her early symptoms (which I never realised at the time were meningitis symptoms & didn't even consider it being that!) were a high temperature, cold hands & feet, floppy & sleepy, refusing to feed with a moaning cry. She started getting poorly on the Friday evening, and we saw an emergency doctor on Saturday morning who sent us away and said to go back at tea time if there was no improvement.

"We ended up taking Katie to A&E at lunch time and thankfully the Dr who saw her put her on antibiotics instantly, before any tests were done. She was in hospital for 10 days but amazingly made a full recovery with no lasting damage to our knowledge. We were so lucky as I know how devastating these diseases can be, so I would urge all who are eligible to make sure they get the vaccines."
