A Hull man's been jailed for 12 weeks after he starved his dog to death.

Staffordshire bull terrier Marshall was left so thin every bone was showing and weighed less than 7 kilogrammes - he died before a vet could treat him.

At Hull Magistrates court yesterday (22nd August) 29 year old Craig Wilson now of Beverley Road, Hull admitted a charge of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

In addition he's been banned from keeping animals for 15 years.

The court heard how the defendant had called up a vet in Hull on December 14 to say his pet had collapsed. The vet urged Wilson to take the pet for emergency treatment but he said he didn’t have transport and was worried about the cost of the treatment.

He then booked a taxi but by the time Marshall arrived at the veterinary surgery he had already passed away.

The vet was concerned about the cause of death being due to neglect and reported the matter to the RSPCA.

Inspector Mitchell said after the case:

“The images of Marshall when he attended the vets are haunting and he clearly suffered for some time looking at his significant weight loss. It is very upsetting to see a pet left in this awful condition.

“Wilson said he fed Marshall everyday but there was no evidence of this. There is never an excuse not to feed pets and anyone struggling should seek help.”
