A lorry driver from Hull who stopped his truck under a motorway bridge to save a man’s life says he's been supporting others since.

Dan Shillito was driving on the M1 near Chesterfield when he spotted someone in danger - he assisted emergency services to help the man down to safety.

Dan says he's been inundated with messages. he said:

"I had hundreds and hundreds of messages from people on my Facebook. A lot of people have told me about their story if they've had the same situation or something similar like that.

"I think a lot of people who have either been in the situation themselves or a lot of people they know, like the friends or the family members, dads, sons have thoughts of it and I think it's really affecting them.

"It's been a bit of a whirlwind but I have got it back to everyone and spoke to everyone and said, stay strong and keep going, I hope the guy is all right and he makes a full recovery and comes back stronger and lives a happy life."

A spokesperson from Derbyshire Police, said:

"We received a call concerning the welfare of a man on a bridge close to junction 29 of the M1 at about 6.30pm on Saturday 6 September.

"Officers were deployed to the scene and the man was led to safety with the help of a member of the public.

"Nobody was injured and the man was taken to hospital to be checked over.

The motorway was closed whilst emergency services dealt with the incident and was later reopened."
