As City of Culture 2017 approaches Hull, local independent cultural groups want to raise awareness about what is available in Hull.

One of these groups includes the Hull Independent Cinema Project, a charity which runs independent film events in the city.

This year they have been nominated for three awards at the Film Society of the Year Awards. The charity has been shortlisted for Best Programming, Best Marketing and Best New Cinema.

James Russell, on the chair of trustees for the project believes that there needs to be a home for independent cinema in the city to help develop 'home grown' talent.

This week has seen the annual film festival which has included sell-out events of screenings in venues across the city.

Mr Russell believes that it brings the film community together as it offers local film makers a platform to show work to the local audience.

Although Hull has several cinemas, James explains that they don't show as many independent films which may have been made in Yorkshire, or by local people.

Such local talent includes Chris Hees who has highlighted the talent that local people have to offer and is working with the Hull Independent Cinema Project charity to run a BFI film school.
