Hull landmarks to light up purple tonight for Holocaust Memorial Day
Buildings such as Hull City Hall will take part in the events
Iconic landmarks across the city of Hull will be lit up in purple as part of Holocaust Memorial Day commemorations.
From dusk tonight - roughly around 4:30pm - buildings throughout the city centre are to light up to remember the six million Jews that were killed during the Holocaust in World War II.
Some of the buildings that will join in the commemorations include Hull City Hall, the Guildhall and the Ferens Art Gallery.
Hull's events are part of a nationwide program of events in order to mark the occasion and remember the lives lost.
A livestream will be broadcast at 7pm for the UK-wide Ceremony to mark the events, with people asked to leave candles out in memory of those who died.
Holocaust Memorial Day is held every January 27th, in order to honour those who died at the hands of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime.
Since then, the persecution and genocides of Jews in Darfur, Bosnia and Cambodia have also been added for people to remember.
Speaking about the initiative, Lord Mayor of Kingston-upon-Hull, Councillor Lynn Petrini said it was so important to keep the memories of what happened alive so history does not repeat itself.
“It is so important that we mark Holocaust Memorial Day, to ensure the lessons of the past are not forgotten," she said.
“On Thursday, we will join cities across the UK in an act of solidarity as we light up some of our most prominent landmarks.
“We encourage people across the city to join us and ‘light the darkness’ to remember the atrocities of history and challenge the hatred and persecution that still exists in the world.”
