A dance group’s getting people moving in North Hull in a bid to get people’s confidence back after being isolated for so long.

Unity in community say more people are struggling to get out after being stuck indoors since the beginning of the pandemic.

Jo and Tamar were dancing on people’s doorsteps during lockdown – now they’re back in the heart of the local community. They have received funding from Hull City Council.

Elements will include line dance, circle dance, playing with props and learning simple routines to popular music from different eras.

One half of the lively duo, Jo Ashbridge explains:

“We have been working with Unity for the last few months as part of their social prescribing project, it’s one of our favourite places to work. There is always such a great atmosphere in the community hub, with participants who are all up for a bit of fun, the chance to learn something new and meet people.

Tamar Draper, Dancer, said:

"It’s been really tough, particularly for older people and now being able to socialise. Sessions like these are vital for people to connect and chat."

Val Cooper, got stuck in with the dance, she said:

"“You need dancing and walking to build your bone strength up. It was really good, I enjoyed it."

Another participant, Jean said:

“Some people don’t have anybody so when they get together, it’s great. It’s the first time I’ve been to anything like this but I’d do it again.”
