Hull City rename East Stand in honour of club’s record goalscorer

A permanent tribute to Chris Chilton Stand will be officially unveiled ahead of Saturday’s match against West Bromwich Albion.

Chris passed away in May last year aged 77, scored 222 goals in 477 appearances for his hometown club between 1960 and 1971.

Nicknamed, ‘Chillo’ Chris became part of the club’s coaching staff and was assistant manager during the promotion seasons of 1982/83 and 1984/85.

There will also be a minute’s applause to celebrate Chris’ life ahead of kick off.

Club chairman Acun Ilıcalı said: “We have started a new era at the football club, but we must always remember to honour the efforts and achievements of those players that have helped to build the history of Hull City. Chris Chilton is a true legend and someone who deserves a fitting tribute to the lasting legacy he already has.”

Chris’ wife, Margaret, and family will be guests of honour at Saturday’s match and we will also be joined by family members of West Brom legend Jeff Astle.

Chris suffered from ill heath in later life and, as well as being supported hugely by Tigers’ fans and the wider football community, was also helped by The Jeff Astle Foundation, launched in 2015 to raise awareness of brain injury in sport.

The minute’s applause will be an opportunity for both sets of supporters to come together and remember two legends of their respective clubs.
