Hull City brush aside Accrington to go top of League One
The Tigers won 3-0
Hull City have moved to the top of League One following a 3-0 win over 10-man Accrington Stanley.
Grant McCann's side took the lead in the 37th minute when Keane Lewis-Potter set up Mallik Wilks before Gavin Whyte doubled Hull's advantage on the rebound when Wilks' shot was parried by Nathan Baxter.
Whyte's Northern Ireland colleague Josh Magennis added a third from the penalty spot after Cameron Burgess earned a second booking in fouling Jacob Greaves in the box.
The result sees The Tigers edge clear of Lincoln on goal difference after the Imps' match at home to Gillingham fell victim to a waterlogged pitch.
Boss Grant McCann said:
“We had to be good tonight, we were playing against, in my opinion, one of the best teams in the league.
“I thought we were excellent in the first half. Tactically, really good. We made them change their shape in the second half, which was a credit to the players and how they stuck to the plan.
“We possibly could have had another couple of goals in the first half if we were a bit more clinical.
“To go in at 1-0, we felt there was more to come. It was nice to see the second goal come when it did, so quickly after half-time.
“It was good play from Mallik, a good position he took up, he was strong and a great finish from Gavin.
“All in all, we had to be very good tonight against a well-drilled team who don’t change their shape for anyone.
“They haven’t this season and we made them do that tonight and that’s a credit to the players.”
