An Army Sergeant from Hull has been picked to take part in the Invictus games in Sydney later this year.

41 year old Sarah Robinson, who's part of a reserve battalion based in the city, will be representing the UK in swimming, cycling and athletics.

Sarah trialled for the Invictus Games as she saw them as a way to get her identity back – that of the soldier, the professional, the competitor and the mother.

“I was someone who was top in her field – a feisty girl who feared nothing and no one; always embracing new challenges and trying new things,” said Sarah.

“Now, my anxiety means I struggle to get out of the door and I feel isolated.

“I need my fight back and make my partner Aaron and my daughters proud of me.

“Through sport and new challenges, I know I can push myself to achieve and change my path for the better.”

It has been a long journey so far but attending the Invictus Games training camps have given Sarah the confidence and determination to succeed as part of a new team. She currently travels up to 60 miles to receive coaching.

“As I become more knowledgeable and fitter, things are slowly becoming easier. I’d like to get to the stage where I can be of a positive example to other reservists who find themselves in this situation."

The team of 72 competitors selected to represent the UK at the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 was exclusively unveiled this morning at Horse Guards Parade.

The athletes – 64% of whom are new to Invictus - were also joined by former Team UK captains, including Paralympic Bronze medallist Dave Henson.

More hopefuls than ever before, 451 WIS military personnel and veterans, trialed 11 sports for one of the 72 places available on Team UK. The trials were attended by HRH Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, in one of their last joint appearances before the Royal Wedding.
