Grimsby's MP Melanie Onn is taking a stand against football hooliganism - calling on parliament to bring in tougher sentences.
It's after 26 people were given community service orders and suspended sentences after an incident in the town earlier this year.
In a question to the Attorney General today in the House of Commons, the Grimsby MP warned that light punishments send the wrong message on violent crime.
The Grimsby MP used an opportunity to ask about the community service orders and suspended sentences handed down to hooligans for the attacks in July 2016.
Onn asked: “Recently 26 of 30 people involved in a pack style attack were sentenced after some excellent work by Humberside police, but my constituents in Grimsby are really alarmed that they’ve effectively been given a sentence of litter picking.
“Does he agree that sends the wrong message to attacks like this on defenceless individuals by groups?”
The Attorney General answered her question by suggesting she refer it to the Law Offices so that it could be looked at more closely.
Speaking later, she said: “I shall take the Attorney General’s advice and query this sentence – it cannot be right that such a violent crime is punished so leniently.
“I’ll always fight for a safer Grimsby for all.
Melanie Onn followed up her question to the minister by querying the sentences given with the Law Offices, as advised by the Attorney General. She has submitted a complaint to the Law Offices.
