Goole hub was originally expected to open in summer 2025 but the council has said the building is now scheduled to open its doors to the public in early 2026 due to complications.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council said the delay was unavoidable because of unforeseen structural, mechanical and electrical complications discovered during intensive investigations following the building’s closure in December.

Meanwhile, sports, exercise classes, health programmes and other activities will still continue at other venues in Goole.

A spokesperson for the council said:

“We are committed to this project and we are working diligently behind the scenes with our contractors to address these issues.

“Preparatory work will continue on the site, paving the way for the main demolition and construction activities which are now set to begin later this year.

“Despite this setback, the council assures residents that the delay will not compromise the quality or features of the project which will be delivered.

“We would like to thank the Goole community for its patience and understanding while we bring this exciting project to fruition.”

When complete, it will include more than 1,600 square metres of new space, including a central food court, library, customer service centre, tag active area, ten-pin bowling alley, soft play area, new learner pool with a health suite and expanded gym and fitness facilities.

Goole Library and the town’s customer service centre, both currently in Carlisle Street, will be relocated to the new hub.

While East Riding Leisure Goole remains closed, the council will continue to offer gym facilities, group exercise classes, and health programmes at the Goole College site in Boothferry Road.

The council will also collaborate with local schools to ensure the continuation of their swimming lesson programme using alternative venues.

Throughout the summer holidays, together with active communities staff, the team will be offering an outdoor programme, to help residents to get active and connected, including walking sports for adults such as netball, football and rugby and children's multi-sport activities.
