Five childrens centres in Hull are set to be closed as part of a new plan to save ÂŁ2.2m.

Hull City Council met this morning to decide where the cuts would come from.

The savings are in addition to the ÂŁ8m already agreed by the local authority in July, bringing the total of proposed savings to ÂŁ10.3m by 2019/20.

Darren Hale is the deputy leader of Hull City Council and told Viking:

“Cabinet today agreed to begin consultation on these further savings proposals of £2.2m.

“It is disappointing that due to the year-on-year cuts in Government funding since 2010, we have had to continually struggle to balance our books and make tough choices in what services we can afford to deliver and offer.

“Sadly, we will see a reduction in staffing in some areas, but where possible, we aim to let people leave voluntarily.

“We will continue to maintain our front-line and vital services as best we can with the finances that we have available, but we cannot sustain such cuts without some changes having to be made into what we are able to deliver.”

Brendan Arnold, Director of Finance, Infrastructure and Transformation, said:

“Maintaining good control of our finances will help the Council to deliver our many statutory responsibilities with reduced budgets. This is a significant challenge but a necessary one if we are to achieve a balanced budget for 2017/18 and in future years.”
