Hull has contributed towards history today by conducting the first civil partnerships into marriages on the first day legislation allows this to be possible.

New legislation means that from today civil partnerships registered in England and Wales can now be converted to a marriage.

Sally and Mandy from Hull entered into a civil partnership in 2012 and converted their civil partnership into a civil marriage at a ceremony today.

Mandy and Sally told Viking FM:

"We would like to Hull City Council for helping us to arrange everything as they have been brilliant.

"We originally wanted to have a marriage but never thought that the legislation would go through, so we settled for a civil partnership.

"We are so pleased that we can now be married and be equal to any other couple in the country."

Jill Fill, Superintendent Registrar at Hull City Council, said:

“This is a key milestone for same sex couples who registered their civil partnership before the introduction of Same Sex Marriage.

"This further change to the legislation now provides these couples the opportunity to convert that original registration into a marriage if they choose to do so.”
