WATCH: Leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council exclusive:

The leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council says more finances will be put into town centres to make them look ‘smart and clean’ to encourage businesses to start up again as ‘more people are shopping online.’

The high street was already facing a decline in the growing number of shops closing down before the pandemic started. Now there are concerns over if empty shops can entice new businesses to bring more footfall into the area.

Question asked by an East Yorkshire resident

Cllr Burton believes more people are turning to online shopping and suggests towns need to be more ‘culturally orientated.’ He said: “We have put over a million pound into re-imaging our town centres to make encourage businesses to come to the area. We might not know what the new town centre will look like as a lot of people have got used to shopping online “

Meanwhile along the coast, the hospitality and tourism sector has really suffered and there are concerns over what impact this has had on villages.

Cllr Richard Burton believes staycations are the future to bring back football and support businesses for the summer months.

He said: “With the vaccination roll out happening the way it is and the fact we’re a country that’s ahead of everywhere else, its highly likely that staycations will be booming so there will be opportunities for businesses to take advantage of it.”
