Ex-Hull City footballer dies after collapsing on pitch

Non-league defender Daniel Wilkinson has died after collapsing on the field, his club Shaw Lane have announced.

A non-league footballer who started his career at Hull City has died, after collapsing on the pitch during a match last night.

Daniel Wilkinson was playing for Shaw Lane AFC in the Northern Premier League Division One South when it happened.

Hull City have tweeted to pay tribute to Daniel, after the news emerged this morning.

Daniel's club, Shaw Lane AFC, announced the news.

In a statement posted on their Facebook page, the Northern Premier League Division One South side based in Barnlsey said the 26-year-old "passed away after collapsing on the pitch'' during a cup match against Brighouse Town last night.

The league's official website said the player "suffered a suspected heart attack'' and was treated by medics for over 30 minutes before being taken to Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax.

Chairman Craig Wood added in the statement:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this time.

The club would like to thank everyone for their heartfelt messages and thoughts that we have received throughout the night. There are no more words at this time.''

Daniel started his career with Hull City before moving into the non-league set-up. He also played for North Ferriby United, Goole and Scarborough and was signed from Rushall Olympic F.C. this summer.
