Concern Over Parking Outside East Riding Schools

The issue will be put to the local authority today.

There's concern children's lives are being put at risk because parents are ignoring parking restrictions outside schools in East Yorkshire.

Parents we've spoken to fear it's only a matter of time until someone's seriously injured as an increasing number choose to park outside school gates during rush hour.

Today, parent and local councillor, Mike Medini, will ask the leader of East Riding Council what's being done to improve safety around schools and target those responsible.

He says Hallgate Primary in Cottingham - where he takes his young daughter - is a particualr problem area. He told us:

"I will be asking if the Leader agrees with me that problems with parking outside schools is an issue in many areas of the East Riding, as seen in Cottingham and can he advise as to the sort of work the Council can do to improve safety and parking outside schools.

“I am very concerned about safety around the schools in my ward and I know there are similar issues in other parts of the East Riding. I am asking the Leader for an update on the measures being put in place so that children stay safe on their journey to and from school.”

This mum we spoke to outside Hallgate Primary agrees it is a big problem...

East Riding Council say they're continuing to work with local schools to try and ease the problem and will consider implementing further parking restrictions in some areas if necessary. A council spokesperson said:

“Problems with parking outside schools is an issue in many areas of the East Riding, and not just in Cottingham.

“The council is working with schools to advise them of strategies that can be adopted to ease the problems and in some cases it may be appropriate for headteachers to communicate with parents to encourage sensible driving and parking.

“These problems are usually caused by inconsiderate parents – while most parents are considerate there are a number who are not and they create these issues, causing problems for other people.

“”Further parking restrictions may be considered in some areas, although these are not generally successful, and enforcement action can be taken where appropriate and requested.

“There is no simple solution, but we will continue to work with schools to encourage safe and sustainable travel and enforce restrictions when necessary.”
