North East Lincolnshire Council have cleaned up the fountain on Cleethorpes seafront after someone put washing-up liquid into the landmark, resulting in a frothy mess.

The local authority are also reminding people that the landmark provides drinking water for birds and insects, and contaminants can have a detrimental effect on wildlife.

In a statement, the council said "please remember that Cleethorpes is home to some internationally-protected species of birds who rely on the coastline for their existence, many stop off here just to rest and take in food and water while travelling thousands of miles on their migration journeys.

"The fountain has now been treated to remove the contaminant, so please leave our fountain alone so that it can be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike."
