A campaign has launched to help reimburse energy customers in Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire with money they could be owed.

It's part of a nationwide initiative by the big six energy suppliers – British Gas, EDF Energy, E.ON, Npower, SSE and Scottish Power – and aims to hand back repayments of around £50 to approximately 3 million energy consumers.

Credit is often left behind when a person switches supplier or moves home.

Lawrence Slade, incoming Chief Executive of Energy UK, said:

“This campaign aims to inform customers throughout the UK about money that might be owed to them by their previous energy supplier. Energy companies have long had systems in place to give back 'energy credit' to customers – this campaign spreads awareness and makes it easier for consumers to check whether they are owed money or not."

It's as many families across our region struggle with energy bills over winter.

Danika Stamford from Hull says being able to pay energy bills at this time of year is a big worry for her family. She told Viking FM:

"We can't have our gas on all the time even though I've got two small children. We can't afford to pay our gas because we were a little behind when we moved into the house so we now have to pay £10 off our gas every time we top up, so that goes down really quick and so does our electric and the kids bedrooms are always cold.

"Putting the gas on is a big worry for us because I want my children to be warm but we can't afford it. We put £30 gas on a week and if we want that to last us then we can't put our heating on.

"My children need more winter clothes but we can't really afford this because we're trying to keep them warm and they want new toys for Christmas and we're really struggling."

'My Energy Credit' enables energy consumers to claim credit repayments through a new 'My Energy Credit' helpline 0370 737 7770 and by going to www.myenergycredit.com
