Burglary Rates Highest In Yorkshire & Northern Lincolnshire
But 9 in 10 burglaries went unsolved.
More burglaries have been taking place in Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire than anywhere else in the country.
That's according to new research which has found that around 11 in every 1 thousand people in our region fell victim to the crime between 2014/15.
But the year before - only 1 in 10 burglaries were solved by Humberside Police.
Margaret from Hull was robbed in her home last year and says she still hasn't got over the ordeal. She told us:
"I opened the living room door and there was a man in the bedroom and he ran at me, knocked me to a side and grabbed my handbag off the dining room table. I tried to hang on to it but he pushed me back again against the door and off he went. At first i was upset and shaken but then I was outraged that he had the cheek to just walk into someone's home.
"I am angry at the fact that it has taken away my confidence. Before I was confident enough to go out in the dark, walk home from work, do my shopping and go out for my tea if I wanted to as I wasn't frightened but now I am very wary.
"I'm constantly now going and checking the door. I have got alarms on and lights but I still check the door, I still check windows and switch lights on periodically all over the flat and that's not right.
"I don't think they realise but they take away more than your belongings, they take away your self confidence and belief. I am getting better but for a week or so after the incident I didn't go out unless I really had to and you can't not do that, you can't live your life according but some people do and that isn't right."
Martin Scott, head of Churchill Home Insurance which carried out the report, said:
“It’s important that householders are aware of the potential threats to their home, which vary significantly depending on where you live. There also appears to be quite a contrast between the highest and lowest authorities in terms of police officer cover, with some areas having more than double the number of full-time officers per head of the population than others.
“Victims of burglary don’t just suffer from financial loss but also emotional trauma, with many subsequently feeling insecure in their own home. While some items like electrical goods are easily replaced, others with sentimental value are often lost forever once stolen.
“Whilst there are clearly big differences between burglary rates by area, the precautions householders should take remain the same. All households should have a comprehensive buildings and contents insurance policy in place in case the worse happens and burglaries do occur.”
