Bridlington residents urged to compete in growing sunflowers
It will also contribute towards a map of the town showing where sunflowers are
People in Bridlington are being urged to grow sunflowers to contribute towards a map.
The idea came about in 2019 by resident David Stone as he has a love for the plants.
He has also started a league table to see which roads are doing the best in growing sunflowers each year.
He said: "I thought in 2019 I'm going to save all the seeds this year and I'm going to put something on Facebook and say 'anyone who wants to grow sunflowers with me I will create a Bridlington sunflower map and we'll do a bit of a fun league table to see which roads are doing the best in any particular year.'
"It's been really good. People started growing them in Spring of 2020 and as we all know there was some pretty unpleasant stuff going on there. It seemed to really strike a mood as maybe it helped people get through the pandemic by growing some seeds, growing some flowers and just cheering themselves up that way whilst keeping themselves busy.
"It's been different roads every year. The longer ones do better like Marton Road, Queensgate and Sewerby Road tend to do pretty well beacuse it's a long road, there are plenty of people on that road. Smaller roads are probably never going to win it unless they get their act together but they could you know. If you're doing it yourself, just knock on your neighbours door and ask if they're interested in doing this."
