Bridlington's Mayor is serving his last day in office.

Liam Dealtry is handing over the chains tonight after being in the role for three years in a row.

A new Mayor will be elected at a meeting of the Town Council this evening.

Liam said: "I've been Mayor for three years now and this mainly brought on due to the Covid situation. The record is from 1945 and there was a Mayor there for six years. He was Mayor during the war years so it's a case of stepping into the breach and making sure everyone was safe.

"I'm tired now. It's been exhausting. I feel emotional about handing over because you do, after a certain length of time, love what you do. You love being in the town and people talking to you. I do feel a bit emotional about it but I am ready for a rest now.

"Everything that you do in the town, the people you meet, it's all a high. We have had a lot of low stages going to funerals, you see people that are poorly, homeless or starving. You do your best for them as Mayor and as a Council, you do the best you can.

"There are times over this last year and a half, two years, I've gone home and I've literally been in tears myself. I've been stood in the shower and I just get emotional and just start crying in the shower because things that you want to do you can't do because you can't do everything, but you're trying, you want to because it's your town and the people that you love.

"It's always emotional, especially when you first get elected and the outgoing Mayor, so tonight that'll be me, hands over the chains of office to the incoming Mayor. It's nothing major but it's just that nice passing of the chains but obviously it's a bit disappointing when you're giving it back."
