Bird Flu Restrictions Removed In East Yorkshire

Duck Farm exclusion zone comes to an end

Experts say wild birds were the most likely cause of bird flu spreading to an East Yorkshire breeding farm. Around 6 thousand ducks had to be culled following the detection of the H5N8 virus at the site in Nafferton last month. A six-mile restriction zone was put in place around the farm but that's now been lifted overnight. Nigel Gibbons is from DEFRA who will remain vigilant, "We've had a really hard look for other sources of disease or spread, and the most likely now is that it was an indirect introduction to the farm from wild birds. So that wild bird risk hasn't gone away.

"We've recently seen two more cases in Europe so we must remain alert to the possibility of this disease."
