A man has appeared in court charged with murder and affray following the death of a footballer and father from East Yorkshire.

Barton Town goalkeeper James Hitchcock, 32, from Cottingham, was found in a life-threatening condition following an incident at York Railway Station last Sunday and rushed to hospital.

British Transport Police said he died from his injuries yesterday surrounded by his family.

Mckenzie DiCicco, 22, from Teesside appeared earlier at York and Selby on Magistrate Court charged with murder and affray and was remanded in custody.

He is next due to appear at Leeds Crown Court tomorrow.

James joined NCEL side Barton Town at the start of the season.

In a statement posted online, the club said their heartfelt thoughts and prayers were with James's wife, his young son Freddie, his parents, family and friends.

Club Chairman Mark Gregory said the club was 'devastated', adding: "James was just a genuine, all round good guy. He is irreplaceable both as a friend and a player."

"On behalf of the club, I would like to extend my condolences to James's family and friends."

All Barton Town FC games this weekend have been cancelled as a mark of respect.
