More than 300 hate crime incidents have been reported to police in Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire since Britain voted to leave the EU.

Viking's been given access to new figures which show that following Brexit, Humberside Police have investigated a total of 318 alleged hate crime incidents.

The biggest spike came in July with a recorded 177 crimes and incidents reported to the force.

Anna Grzybowska is from Hull's Polish Community Centre and fears attacks on minority communities will become even more frequent once Britain exits Europe.

She told us:

"People are sharing that they don't feel safe here. I am meeting parents in Hull whose children are being targetted and have experienced hate when they've been tackled by peers. We thought that when we entered Great Britain we would feel safe but in many cases people don't feel safe anymore.

"There are people, especially those who don't speak fluent English and have many English friends, who feel very isolated and don't feel safe when they are meeting the British person on the street.

"Some of these people have been living here for ten years and have their roots here and it is a very sad and difficult position that we are now in."

Sergeant Chris Swaby is from Humberside Police and inists they are cracking down on the problem and says they are making it easier for victims to report:

"Humberside Police take every report of hate crime extremely seriously and if anyone has any concerns that they are not being dealt with appropriately, I would urge them to get in contact with us.

"We are putting a lot of investment into training our staff to improve that process for people reporting this type of crime.

"There has been an increase in reported hate crime incidents as a result of the referendum but we have put things in place locally to try and build trust and relationships with our communities. We now target both the victims as well as the offenders so that we can actually educate and stop some of these future offenders.

"Humberside Police will not tolerate this, we will take very positive action and if it is reported to us we will take every step we can to investigate this thoroughly and identify those responsible."
