Movie icon Val Kilmer has confused Top Gun fans with a bizarre Facebook post about the eagerly anticipated sequel.

Confirming he will once again be reviving his role as LT Tom "Iceman" Kazanski in Top Gun 2 alongside Tom Cruise’s Maverick, 55-year-old Val then went on to reveal that two other colossal stars will be involved in the action movie.

He wrote: “I just got offered Top Gun 2 - not often you get to say "yes" without reading the script... "It's starring Gene Hackman…" "Yes" "The director is Francis Coppola..." “Yes!"

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)0; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_GB/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); > I just got offered #topgun2 - not often you get to say "yes" without reading the script..."It's starring Gene...> > > Posted by

“Jerry Bruckheimer and Tom Cruise!!! "Yes." We will all miss Tony Scott one of the kindest gentlemen I've ever met in the film biz, but let's fire up some fighter jets again!!!”

When fans began salivating over the prospect of the legendary Gene Hackman and Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola being involved, Val then backtracked.

Editing the post, he added: “Francis Coppola and Gene Jackman are examples of what an actor says "yes" to. They are not involved. So sorry for the misunderstanding.” Oh dear.

One of the most loved action movies of all time, 1986’s Top Gun was a box office smash making $355million from a $15million budget and propelled Tom Cruise into a global superstar.

Speaking about Top Gun 2, David Ellison, chief executive officer of film company Skydance Productions, said: “It is very much set in today where we have drone technology and fifth-generation fighters.

“It's exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots.”
