After a turbulent year Twycross Zoo will reopen it's doors to pre-booked members of the public on April 12th as Covid restrictions ease.

The Zoo says they lost more than 336,000 visitors during the pandemic, which cost them £5.5m pounds in income, while running costs remained at £500,000 a month.

Simply feeding the zoo's more than 500 animals carries with it a price tag of £25,000 a month. The site has also seen an 86% drop in memberships during lockdown.

During lockdown six rain lorikeets have been born at the zoo, as well as a dusky leaf monkey, two Kirk's dik-dik antelopes, one eagle owl, one Francois langur monkey and a spider monkey.

The Zoo say they've don't meet the criteria of the Zoo Animal Fund and as such have been unable to access government support to help them face the "unprecedented economic impact of Covid-19".
