Nottinghamshire Police have launched an investigation and appeal for information after a horse was found dead and mutilated.

The horse, named Alfie, was a 16-year-old traditional tri-coloured cob, was found in a field at a property off Owday Lane in the Carlton-in-Lindrick district of Worksop.

Alfie was found by his owner at 10:30am on Thursday (July 25th), who called emergency services to investigate.

Following initial lines of enquiries, it was found that Alfie had been alive and healthy on Wednesday (July 24th) after being ridden and bathed around 7pm.

Officers are now continuing the investigation, looking into CCTV footage of the area overnight, as well as carrying out door-to-door questioning.

Speaking about the case, Chief Inspector Clive Collings - leader of Nottinghamshire Police’s rural and wildlife crime team, described the incident as "sickening" and "heartless".

"This is the epitome of a senseless and violence attack," he said, "Alfie’s owner had been left distraught by his cruel death and wants justice for him.

“As part of our ongoing inquiries we’re asking people in the area to check to see if they may have any recorded CCTV or doorbell camera footage which could help us, or if they recall seeing any suspicious activity between 7pm on Wednesday and 10.30am on Thursday."

He added that horse owners in the area should remain vigilant in case of further potential attacks on other animals.

Anyone who may have any information into the incident can get in touch with the force by calling 101 and quoting incident reference number 244 from July 25th.
