Searches of the Rover Soar in Leicester have ended after police say there is no conclusive evidence a woman has entered the water.

Reports were first made to police in the early hours of Thursday.

Since then, days of extensive searching, including the use of sonar technology, police divers and a Tactical Support Team, officers say this part of the investigation has concluded.

It follows witness claims that a woman climbed over the gantry of the Gimson Bridge in Upperton Road before running off and last being seen on Swan Bridge.

The woman is described as white, with dark hair in a ponytail, aged between 30 and 40 years old. She was wearing a black hooded puffer jacket, dark blue ripped jeans and had piercing to either her upper lip or her nose.

Witnesses reported she spoke in broken English, in what was thought to be a Eastern European accent.

Chief Inspector David Stokes, coordinating the search yesterday, said:

“With the account given to us by witnesses in the early hours of Thursday morning, it was the right course of action to consider that the woman may have entered the water and to deploy our resources accordingly.

"However, following three days of extensive searching we have found no conclusive evidence to suggest the woman entered the water. As such we are focusing on establishing if the woman may have left the area on foot. Our examination of CCTV will continue, alongside other enquiries, to try and identify who this woman is and where she may have gone.

“I would continue to urge anyone with information to come forward. If you were the women involved - please contact as we want to know you are safe and can help you access any additional support you may need.”

Leicester Police will continue to examine CCTV and will carry out other enquiries.
