A man has been arrested after a fire in a Nottingham flat.

Emergency services were called to the blaze on Aberdeen Street at around 1:15 this morning.

Officers say they became concerned for the safety of a man inside the property with a knife.

Three officers suffered smoke inhalation while trying to rescue him.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service attended and had partially put out the blaze, when police say a suspect attempted to run from the scene.

A 39-year-old man is being questioned on suspicion of arson and criminal damage.

We understand people living nearby who had to be evacuated have now returned to their homes.

Chief Inspector Neil Humphris, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“This incident required a large number of emergency services personnel to bring to a safe conclusion.

“It is thanks to their skill and professionalism that no one was seriously hurt.

“Investigations alongside our fire service colleagues are ongoing and anyone with information should get in touch without delay.”
