Four people have been arrested and bailed over a burglary worth thousands of pounds at a community hospital in Leicestershire.

Copper wiring was taken from the grounds of Hinkley and District General early yesterday morning.

Leicestershire Police say a site under construction suffered significant damage.

A spokesperson said:

"Officers received a report of a suspicious vehicle within the grounds of the Mount Road site around 12.55am on Tuesday (28 January).

"When officers arrived at the scene one of the two suspect vehicles was seen leaving the site and failed to stop for them. That vehicle was last seen heading along Rugby Road in Burbage.

"It’s believed a group of people broke into a premises which was currently under construction within the site of the hospital. They stole thousands of pounds worth of copper wiring and caused a significant amount of damage.

"CCTV operators alerted officers to a second vehicle which was still on the site and suspects were seen running through the car park.

"Following enquiries carried out, four men, aged 26, 27, 31 and 35, were arrested on suspicion of burglary (other than dwelling). They have all since been released on police bail pending further enquiries."

Sergeant Fiona Day from Hinckley Neighbourhood Policing Area, said:

“Our investigation remains ongoing and are currently looking through CCTV and carrying out house to house enquiries in the area.

“It is sad that a community resource has been targeted in this way and no doubt this incident will have an impact on the ongoing work on the site.

“We would urge anyone who may have witnessed what happened or saw people or vehicles acting suspiciously around the area at this time. Also, if you were driving in the Rugby Road area of Burbage and captured any footage on your dashcam equipment of a vehicle driving at speed through the area we would like to speak to you.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Leicestershire Police on 101 or report via the force's website quoting crime number 25*52959.
