Fatal collision on the M1 in Leicestershire

Police are appealing for witnesses following a crash on the M1.

Officers received a call at 4.32am this morning (Friday 9 February) to report a vehicle was travelling in the wrong direction along the northbound carriageway.

Shortly after, further information was received that the vehicle, a blue Jaguar X-Type, had been involved in a collision with an HGV.

The driver of the Jaguar was pronounced deceased at the scene. The HGV driver was uninjured.

The carriageway was closed in both directions while emergency services respond at the scene. The southbound carriageway has since been reopened.

Due to recent police contact with the deceased, in line with procedure, a mandatory referral will be made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Detective Constable Charlotte Wright, from the force’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, is appealing for witnesses.

DC Wright said: “I would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the Jaguar prior to the collision or the collision itself.

“If you have any information, which may include any dashcam footage, please get in touch with us.”
