Three men jailed after horrific car crash involving a toddler in Chesterfield
All involved in the crash were unharmed
Three men have been given jail terms after being involved in a serious crash, together with a three-year-old boy.
Brothers Michael and Robert Bower were with Declan Webster, having drank in several beer gardens around the town of Chesterfield in August 2020.
After spending several hours in one garden, Webster and the brothers decided to race around the town, reaching speeds of 84 miles an hour.
However, things came to an abrupt end when Webster ploughed his Toyota Corolla into the side of a lorry at Whittington Moor roundabout.
Webster was behind the wheel of the car, but a woman and a three-year-old boy were also in the car when the crash happened.
Amazingly, all those involved in the crash were able to get away uninjured from the incident before being arrested.
At a sentencing hearing at Derby Crown Court on Wednesday (February 9th), all three men were found guilty for their roles in the events.
Robert Bower, 33, of Hindley Road, Chesterfield, was jailed for 14 months, while his brother Michael, aged 28, of Corner Pin Close, Staveley, was sentenced to 12 months.
Daniel Webster, aged 33, living on Spital Lane, Chesterfield, was also handed a jail term of 16 months. All three men also were banned from driving for various periods.
Speaking about the ruling, PC Stu Smith from Derbyshire Police's Road Policing Unit said he was shocked that no one was hurt.
"It is pure luck that no-one was seriously hurt, or killed, in this incident. All three men behaved extremely recklessly, putting their own lives and the lives of others at risk," he said.
“Declan Webster’s apparent disregard for the safety of his young son and partner, who were passengers in his car is particularly shocking.
“Today’s sentencing shows that dangerous driving will not be tolerated on Derbyshire’s roads.
“I hope that Webster, Bower and Bower will realise the true gravity of what they have done and will feel grateful that their arrogant and irresponsible behaviour didn’t cost anyone their life.”
