Man arrested after people threatened with machete in Newark
He's thought to have thrown the weapon into the river
A man has been arrested after two people were threatened with a machete in Newark.
Police were called to Mather Road at around 7:40pm on Saturday, quickly finding the suspect.
Its thought he got rid of the weapon by throwing it into the nearby river.
The 33-year-old was arrested on suspicion of possession of a bladed article in a public place and threatening behaviour.
He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker after allegedly spitting at a detention officer.
Superintendent Suk Verma, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:
“Response officers did a fantastic job to arrive on the scene within minutes of the call and locate a suspect as part of their initial enquiries.
“While no weapon was recovered, the observation of what is thought to have been a machete being discarded into the River Trent will certainly form part of the investigation into what happened.
“We are committed to ensuring that Nottinghamshire is a safe place to live, work and socialise and we will always take reports of threats of violence and weapons possession very seriously.
“The further report that the suspect spat at an officer while in custody is totally unacceptable and we will be thoroughly investigating this.
“Emergency workers work incredibly hard to protect the public and it is abhorrent to think that anyone would think it is okay to assault those who work to keep us safe.”
