Visiting restrictions at Dumfries hospital as respiratory illness cases increase

It means visitors will only be admitted to DGRI for end-of-life care, children, births, and patients with mental health needs

Temporary visiting restrictions have been put in place at Dumfries and Galloway’s main hospital, amid a sharp rise in cases of respiratory illness.

The health board says it is taking proactive steps to protect patients, staff, and visitors and that – effective immediately - , hospital visiting at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary is being restricted to essential visits only.

Essential visiting is for:

• End-of-life care

• Supporting children in hospital

• Attending a birth

• Supporting patients with mental health needs, including dementia, learning disabilities, or autism

In a statement Medical Director Dr Kenneth Donaldson says: “We understand how difficult it is to limit hospital visits, but this step is vital to ensure the safety of everyone in our hospitals. By restricting visits, we can help reduce the spread of illness and focus on caring for those who need us most.”

Anyone planning an essential visit is asked to contact the ward in advance by calling 01387 246246.

Dr Donaldson is also encouraging everyone eligible individuals to take up vaccination opportunities.

He said: “Vaccination remains one of our best defences against respiratory illnesses. If you haven’t already received your flu or COVID-19 vaccination, please visit www.nhsinform.scot/wintervaccines for more information.”
