British medal secured at UCI para-cycling in Dumfries

Individual time trials are taking place today and tomorrow, with one British rider already on the podium

The UCI Word Para-Cycling Championships are underway in Dumfries, with day one coming to a close.

The individual time trials have been setting off and finishing at the Whitesands, and will continue tomorrow on the 10th of August, while the road race will be based at the Crichton estate on the 11th and 12th.

Crowds have turned out in their masses to watch the worlds largest cycling event take place in the heart of the region.

Dame Sarah Storey is one of the athletes taking part in tomorrow, but fans don't have to wait till then for hopes of British success.

18 year old Brit Felix Barrow made it onto the podium this morning, taking third in the men's T2 individual time trial.

His success comes eight years after a near fatal car crash.

Felix's family are here supporting, and say they are 'immensely proud', cheering him on loudly as he became the first rider to set off at 10am this morning.

Competitors can take part within sub categories across four different divisions.

Explanations of these divisions can be seen below:

B – ‘Tandem’

Athletes with partial or full visual impairments will ride with a sighted pilot.

C- ‘Bicycle’

Athletes ride a standard bike with possible adaptations to account for specific impairments.

H- ‘Handcycle’

Those unable to ride a bicycle or tricycle ride a handcycle, with two position options available dependant on athlete requirements.

T- ‘Tricycle’

Athletes who are unable to ride a two wheeled bike can cycle in this category, to overcome difficulties posed by lack of balance or pedalling restrictions.
