Spectators get behind a third day of UCI action in Dumfries
The change of location has brought with it a dedicated fan village
It was a change of scene for UCI para-cycling riders today, with competition moving up to the Crichton estate for the road racing portion of the championship.
British athletes including Felix Barrow, Luke Jones, and Claire Danson have all been saddling up once again.
18-year-old Felix set off first in the men’s T2 category, narrowly missing out on a medal and placing fourth.
A family affair
The young rider’s support team were out in force, with parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends all here to cheer him on.
They say it’s a great opportunity for so many of them to get together:
“This is a local - basically - World Championships, we’re not going to get much closer than this.
“So we decided to get everyone here. We’ve taken the opportunity and flown everyone up, we’ve told everyone about it and they’ve all come so it’s been great.”
Describing the support as ‘unreal’, Felix was in good spirits coming off the course.
Action will continue into the rest of this afternoon and tomorrow, when the final races will take place in the region.
For many, it’s been a great chance to watch some elite action right on their doorstep from a fan village with plenty stalls and food trucks.
Robert has come down from Ayr. He says it’s a brilliant environment for the kids:
“It’s great, the kids can run about to their hearts content. There’s no cars around, there’s no way they can get onto the course. The Crichton is fantastic for them.”
To the delight of many fans, Scottish stars Fin Graham and Jenny Holl will be gearing up tomorrow, with racing getting underway from 08:45.
