A Stranraer woman who was forced to leave her care home last week has been moved into a nursing home that has scabies.

Belmont Care Home backed out of a care package, saying Irene Brown's needs had become too complex for staff there.

She is now staying at Cumloden Manor care home in Newton Stewart where the manager has confirmed there are "numerous cases" of the skin disease.

Irene’s son Matthew Brown says everyone involved in her move knew about the outbreak apart from the family and yet she was still moved 25 miles down the road away from everyone and everything she knew.

He says it’s been one thing after another:

“My mum was in an environment where she was getting looked after and then put somewhere that has issues with scabies. I mean, that’s just mind blowing how people could treat my mum like an animal. You wouldn’t treat any animal like that.

“I want to get this matter resolved. I just feel like things are not getting better for my mum, it’s like everything is just going against my mum in every way. All I want is a bit of justice for my mum because it’s just not fair on her.”

NHS Dumfries and Galloway and the Nurse Manager at Cumloden Manor care home have both confirmed the outbreak of scabies and said:

“Work has been taking place in response to a number of cases of scabies associated with Cumloden Manor care home in Minnigaff.

“Cumloden Manor care staff have been working hard alongside an NHS multi-disciplinary team to manage this outbreak in line with national guidance.

“Family members of those affected by the outbreak have been informed, and the home remains open to normal visiting.

Just last week, Greatest Hits Radio told you that the Brown family were trying to fight against the move of their mum/gran.

The family have commented saying it’s “unfair” and should never have been allowed to happen.

Matthew Brown says it’s been a tough time and it’s starting to take a toll on his mental health.

“Now my mum is an environment that has issues, she’s 25 miles away from her friends and family. It’s getting me down. I try to keep on going but it’s always in my thoughts.

“My mum was happy and content at Belmont Care Home and they still moved her on the Monday knowing it Cumloden Manor care home had issues.”

He added that he will be seeking professional advice to take legal action against the move to her new home.
