Special permission is being sought for the clean-up of a significant structure in Dumfries.
Dumfries War Memorial, which has stood outside St John’s Scottish Episcopal Church, for more than a century, is in need of a makeover.
And even though water will be used rather than harsh chemicals, planning permission is still required due to the age of the memorial.
Dumfries and Galloway Council has submitted a formal application to its own planning committee, which is set to be signed off by councillors next Thursday.
Planning papers state: “The memorial depicts the figure of a Scottish solider, standing on a square granite plinth, which has a pillar on each corner and steps to the base.
“Names are inscribed on both the plinth and the steps. The application is accompanied by a method statement which states that the memorial appears to be structurally in good order with no signs of open joints or movement.
“The stone is in good condition, showing little weathering with all lettering still clearly visible. It is however soiled, with a build-up of dirt, algae and lichen in places.
“This application seeks planning permission to clean the memorial using water and brushes. No chemicals would be used, and the work would be carried out by experienced contractors, working from a mobile tower scaffold where necessary.
"The memorial would be left looking clean, but not as new, as there would be residual patina.”
