An exhibition showcasing school pupils' tree focussed artwork is open to members of the public from Friday 26th until Monday 29th May, and is located in Castle Douglas Art Gallery.

Galloway Glens Landscape Partnership are running the exhibition, in connection with its ‘Fantastic Forest Festival’, which seeks to inspire people of all ages about the trees and woodlands across Galloway.

Pupils from local schools produced their artistic designs after learning about the science of trees, and what they can do for the environment. 100 drawings are on display, with artwork by young ‘tree designers’ from Dalry, Kells, Kirkcudbright, and Castle Douglas Primary Schools.

Also on display is a large interactive piece of artwork, which allows visitors to step on top, and imagine they are part of the tree. Pupils have already been along to the gallery to see their designs as part of the wider exhibition.

Promoting a greener future

The primary schools involved were awarded 20 native trees to plant in their playgrounds and communities. Understanding climate change and the importance of biodiversity were central aims of the project.

Jan Hogarth, Galloway Glens Education and Community Engagement Officer says she’s impressed by the creativity on display, and the environmental awareness. She said: “I highly recommend coming along to see this exhibition of over 100 drawings by some very talented young people."

“Looking at these drawings is so inspiring and fills me with hope because if these young people are looking after nature now and in the future, there is a chance for more nature restoration and biodiversity in our landscapes and communities. This in turn helps slow climate change and ensures that life within our natural environment can flourish.”

Parents, teachers, friends, and all members of the public are welcomed to have a look at the artwork. The exhibition is open from 10:00-16:00 until Monday.
