Plans to transform an eyesore on Sanquhar High Street are now underway, as the community takeover project hits an important milestone.

After four years of fighting for ownership of the Whigham Inn, the Sanquhar Enterprise Company finally got the keys to the building yesterday afternoon.

Although no definite plans have been made for what will happen with the building, Community Development Officer Ronnie Bradford says first things first is giving the exterior a makeover.

“The first plan is to look at securing funds to give the building a bit of a facelift at the moment, while we carry on with the major works, which will also require major funding.”

While the search for more funding is ongoing, Bradford shares a couple of options they’re looking at for the building’s future use:

“We will also be relooking at the plans which will be, predominantly, we feel, at the moment, community housing because of the drastic lack of affordable housing.

“But we will also be paying homage to the connections with Burns.”
